A closer look tells us something different. Dylan’s electric ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’ preceded the Byrds’ version of ‘Mr Tambourine Man’, which owed just as much to the Beach Boys – whose epochal Pet Sounds came out a full year before Sgt Pepper.
