Gimme Some Sex-FIZZ” is arguably fair the motto of the STAGS from Wigan, Northwest England, the hometown of Northern Soul, of pies and of Uncle Joe’s Minballs. But not only the motto assured us of admitting this squad about their charmaing singer Miss Topsy STAG to our small SOUNDFLAT RECORDS-family. This band convinces with their independent interpretation of different music styles of the 60’s era. Whether Sixties Garage, Beat, Mod-Instros, R&B, R’N’R or Power Pop, you can find all styles in the shakin’-groovy sound of the STAGS. The STAGS are driven through the unique groovy sound of the Hammond organ made by Reginald Steinway. Alone the way this instrument is played will bring every rear to shake, but is additionally supported by Mr. Murdo Gloves (Bass), Kenny Roquette (Drums), Conway Castle (Gitarre) and Singer Topsy Stag. If you want to describe the sound of the STAGS figuratively, you would possibly say: BANANA SPLITS meets THE MOHAWKS at Wigan-Bus-Station! The STAGS are probably musically inspired by artists like GEORGIE FAME, LULU, THE SONICS, JIMMY SMITH, SHOCKING BLUE, YOUNG RASCALS, THE SHADOWS or THE EASYBEATS.
You can find several coversongs like e. g. the Boogaloo-soul song “HOT DOG” by THE FOUR SHELLS, the R&B Monster-Track “CHICKEN NECKS” by DON & JUAN, the Dancfloor-Smasher “CAN’T STOP THE WANT” von SANDY SARJEANT, or the French Ye-Ye classic “MOUSTACHE A PAPA” by ANNA BELL. Apart from the coverversions there are of course ass-shaking, groovy self composed songs with Hammond-sound too like e. g. “TEXAS CAVE SALAMANDER”, “TREE FINGER” and “SEX FIZZ”. With “DO THE TON” the STAGS show their predilection for speed and 60’s Motocross-Machines. This subject acted as the template for the brilliant cover artwork too!
